Kolkata, Dec. 16 : The Alipore Court on Tuesday stated that Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra, who had earlier this week been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Saradha chit-fund scam, will remain in police custody for a further three days.
Mitra’s lawyer Baishannor Chatterjee confirmed the terms of the judgement, adding that a plea for bail had also been rejected.
” Madan Mitra was produced at the Alipore Court today. The CBI, after keeping him in police custody for seven days, requested for the custody to be extended by a further five days, while we requested that bail be granted,” Chatterjee told the media.
“The honourable court did not agree to our bail demands for Mitra. However, the duration of the police custody has been extended by a further three days up to December 19,” he added.
Chatterjee further stated that the court rejected a plea by the CBI to allow voice recordings of an alleged conversation between the West Bengal Transport and Sports Minister and Saradha boss Sudipto Sen as evidence.
“The prayer regarding the voice recording has been rejected by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at the court,” he said.
“Mitra is not keeping well, and we had submitted the required medical papers stating the same. The court has ordered medical assistance for him,” he added.
Taking strong exception to Mitra’s arrest on Friday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier termed his arrest ‘illegal and unconstitutional’.
Last Month, TMC MP Srinjoy Bose had been arrested by the CBI in connection with the multi-crore scam.
